Hello parents/guardians!
Our November focus for reading is Main Idea and supporting details. Math Investigations focus is Place Value, Studying Subtraction, and Adding and Subtracting Larger Numbers.

Things you can do at home to support you child with reading:
Make sure you daughter/son are reading books that are at their reading level. Be actively involved in your daughter/son education career. (i.e. have the read to you, read to them, ask them about their day at school, ask what they learned, have them giving an example of what they've learned in math, have them apply the reading strategy from the mini-lesson while reading at home). There are many educational website for students to learn and have fun with at home. Your son and daughter knows these sites. They use them at school all the time. Have them go to them and play educational games. Provide your child with interesting books at home. Make reading a fun family activity. Read as a family and talk about the book together. Compliments your child about reading efforts.

Things you can do at home with math:
There's a host of math websites with cool games for kids. Practice multiplication and division flash cards with your child. Have them show and explain the math strategy they worked on in class. Avoid negative comments. Instead give support and encouragement.

October Focus

Math Investigations Unit 2 Focus:
Finding the volume of rectangular prism.
Use standards units to measure volume.
Identify how the dimensions of a box change the volume is changed.

Reading Objectives Focus:
Good reading a habits and procedures.
Good readers listen to one another.
Good readers turn and talk.
Getting to know the classroom library.
Good readers take care of books.
Good readers build stamina.
Good readers choose just right books.

Writing:
Descriptive writing: Writing about Ft. Atkinson

Social Studies:
Preparing a timeline of Ft. Atkinson, the Winnebago Nation, and U.S. history (1800's)

Parents and students,
We like to welcome you to our 5th grade blog. Here, you'll learn what are math and reading objectives are for the month. You can share somethings with us that you see your kids are improving in at home, ask questions about our math and reading curriculum, ask about math and reading strategies, and ways you can help you daughter/son be successful. I hope all of you will sign up and participate in our blog. Technology is the future and we feel our blog will be a great way to communicate with parents and students.
